Become A Volunteer

If you believe that everyone in society deserves the opportunity to achieve their literacy goals, you share our vision. By volunteering with READ, you will help transform lives. As a non-profit, volunteers are a critical part of our organization. READ’s volunteer positions are in the following areas: Noisy Kids Reading Club; adult learner support; reception and clerical; bookkeeping; data entry; research and special events.

What are the steps toward becoming a volunteer?

  4. Attend an interview to
    1. confirm your availability and the level of commitment required
    2. outline your skills and interests
    3. review volunteer position opportunities and requirements
  5. Provide references
  6. Obtain a current Criminal Record Check
  7. Attend a volunteer orientation session and sign a confidentiality agreement
  8. Complete specific training for your placement area with staff

What kind of commitment do I have to make?

We ask that you commit to four hours per week for six months. After the first three months, we will schedule a meeting between yourself and a staff supervisor to ensure things are going smoothly.

How will I benefit?

As a READ volunteer, you will have to opportunity to

  • assist the society in helping people achieve their literacy goals
  • gain valuable practical work experience and build interpersonal skills
  • attend in-house training and workshops
  • have access to knowledgeable staff
  • make connections into a field or topic of interest
  • obtain a letter of reference
  • attend special recognition events
  • be reimbursed an amount equal to bus fare for your regular shift
