Student Showcase

Enjoy a sampling of students’ work. These excerpts were taken from the June 2011 issue of our bi-annual publication In Words, which includes a much larger collection of writing and art by children, youth and adults who are improving their literacy with READ. Me and My Mommy

My mom and I have a lot in common. My mom likes arts and crafts, gardening and food. We both like stickers.  My mom likes making cookies and I like eating them.  We both like walking the dog.  We also have similar personalities.  We are both happy and polite but sometimes we forget to say please. My mom has dark curly hair and hazel eyes, but I have light wavy hair and blue eyes.  Our colours are not the same but we do look alike with our shapes and that makes me feel warm inside.

The Fearless Knights

The squeaky drawbridge has come down and the fearless knights came out on their horses.  The knights got their swords ready to fight.  Then their arch nemesis arrived at the castle, and they got their swords out to fight.  They started to charge.  The fearless knights won the battle, and they got revenge of the red crystal.

You’re Not Alone

photo of a hand-drawing of Luna and Hannah, by Nina K.It was a hot, sunny day at Malisiam Magic School.  A young witch, Hannah, was staring at a new freshman named Luna.  She had long blue hair, three blue eyes, four arms, and a long tail.  Hannah had never seen a girl like this before.  She was pretty, however, she had no friends.  So Hannah decided to talk to her.

“Hi!” said Hannah, standing in front of her desk.  “I’m Hannah!  You’re Luna, right?”  she inquired.  Luna nodded.  “So…wanna hang out?”

“No thanks,” Luna replied sharply.  “To me, making friends is a waste of time.”

Then Luna picked up all her things and walked away.  Hanna was stunned.  She wondered why Luna didn’t want to have friends.  Day after day, no one wanted to be friends with her because she was cold to everyone.  One day, when Hannah was outside, walking alone in the small forest near her school, she noticed something sparkling in the bushes.  It was a blue, jeweled necklace.  Suddenly, she saw Luna, searching for something.  “What is she doing?” Hannah wondered.

The Wind Whispers

The wind whispers
To all the birds
And the trees
All the flowers
And the bees
The wind whispers
In their ears
And tells them what it hears
And that’s why
The birds sing
The trees silently hush
The flowers laugh
And the bees buzz

Video Games

Video games are fun.  Pretty much all of mine are based on Mario.  I have more than three, but today I’m going to talk about three games.  The games are called Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario Brothers.

Mario Kart is where Mario and his friends are in cars.  There are a whole bunch of races with about twelve people in each race.  You try to come in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th.

Mario Galaxy 2 is when Mario gets stuck up in space.  He finds stars called lumbas.  The only way to get out is to complete eight levels in each world, and there are eight worlds.  This guy named Bowser has castles in each world, and the last level always has a Bowser’s Castle.

Super Mario Bros. is when Bowser and his kupa kids put somebody in a cage in Bowser’s castle.  Mario and Luigi have to go rescue that person, who I think is Princess Peach.

Princess Peach

clipart of a princessOne day a little girl had a father and a mother and two sisters and a pet dog. Her name was Princess Peach. They lived in the forest. One day they picked berries and they saw a witch who led them to a chocolate factory. They ate all the chocolate and the witch said, “I’m going to eat you!”

Luckily, their dog was with them and he ran home. “Molly and Holly are in trouble!” said the talking dog.  “They are trying to save the Princess Peach, who is screaming for help. They pushed the witch in the pot and their mother and father found them and they took them home and lived happily ever after.” The End

The Horses

One day there were two horses.  One was a girl, and one was a boy.  They were really young; they were almost one year-old.  The farm where they lived burned down.  Their parents got burned from their head to their hooves.

hand drawng of horses by MirraL K.The two little horses ran away.  They were twins so each of them thought of running away at the exact same time.  They kept running and running until they got to the forest.  It was getting dark, and it was nearly their bedtime.  As you know, horses stand up while they sleep.  They fell asleep.

The farmer’s cousin was the one who had started the fire.  He wanted the horses because he was jealous.  He tried to catch the twins, but he was too slow for them.

The horses found a safe spot.  It was a very healthy, beautiful garden with vegetables and water.  They lived there until they were 16.  Then a very nice person planted more vegetables and brought more water and filled a lake.  He stayed with them.  Even today they all live happily in the garden.
