Positive feedback eases learning struggles

Isaac was not that eager to come to READ at first, but once the Grade 2 student realized that getting help with reading was making him feel good about school, he stopped fighting.

“He gets nothing but positive feedback so it’s not something he fights anymore, which is a relief,” says Isaac’s mom, Jill.

While Isaac excels in soccer and karate and has a healthy self-esteem, he was also aware and bothered by the realization that he was behind many of his classmates in reading. “I do notice that if something is amiss in school, confidence is the first thing to go and it can be devastating,” Jill says.

With teacher Lois Theaker’s help twice a week, Isaac has progressed from being a tentative beginning reader who was struggling to sound out words to reading chapter books like Ricky Ricotta. “It is lovely to see his confidence growing,” Lois says, noting that his written work is also improving.

“He’s come leaps and bounds,” Jill says.
