Learners' Stories

One-on-one help key to reading success

With consistent one-on-one help, 18-year-old Jessalynn is enjoying reading for the first time in her life.

“I buy books at the mall all the time, now that I actually enjoy reading,” she says.

Jessalynn had difficulty learning to read when she was in elementary school and has attended READ on and off since she was in Grade 4. Though she tried other learning programs, she says the individualized help she gets at READ made the difference.

“I feel like I can ask questions whenever I need help,” she says, adding that she enjoys teacher Yvonne Benoit’s youthful energy and ability to motivate her. “I like having someone look over my work so I feel confident in what I am handing in.”

Jessalyn recently graduated from high school and is now considering a career in accounting or in the culinary arts.
