Workplace Learning

About our workplace learning programs

Companies need an edge to attract and retain the best employees. Investing in training is a way to become an “employer of choice,” and has proven business benefits, including improved safety, productivity and profitability.

When employees are given the opportunity to improve their basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics, they become more confident, flexible and loyal.

What we can do for you

The READ Society specializes in creating custom workplace learning programs delivered by professional teachers. We offer flexible daytime and evening schedules based on company and employee needs. Our teachers can come to your workplace, or you can send your employees to us.

We begin by evaluating the basic skills needs of your workforce through a workplace needs assessment. Next, we help you set training objectives keyed to your business goals. Our professional educators then design customized programs.

One of the most successful options is blending basic skills education with on-the-job training. Using your company’s own forms, schedules and documents, our teachers improve employees’ basic skills with one-on-one teaching, on-site short courses and individual learning plans. We can even simplify and rewrite your workplace documents in plain language as part of the program.

We provide instruction in reading, document use, writing, oral communications, problem solving, mathematics, computer skills and English as a second language.

We are offering employers and employees in BC’s Capital Region two unique opportunities to participate in workplace learning programs with funding through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement. More …

Our experience

The READ Society has been involved in workplace learning since the early 1990s, and we have been helping adults and children improve their literacy skills since 1976.

In 2008, Service Canada funded READ’s year-long project to understand employer and employee workplace learning needs in BC’s Capital Region.  We learned that employers need quick, affordable solutions based on best practices.

Our Phase 1 Report "Workplace Learning – Bridging Employer and Employee Needs in BC’s Capital Region” is available for downloading from our publications page.
