Family LiteracyAbout Family Literacy
Playing games to improve literacy skills in 2011 Family literacy happens whenever children and their caregivers read together – aloud or side-by-side. Parents are their children’s first and best teachers and they have a unique opportunity to raise readers. The READ Society participates in Family Literacy Day, organized by ABC Life Literacy Canada annually on January 27. On this special day, literacy-themed events are coordinated by literacy organizations, schools, public libraries and families. You can find a link to ABC Life Literacy Canada on our resources and links page. In 2011, we hosted our first-ever Game-A-Thon for Family Literacy Day at Ruth King elementary school in partnership with Capital Families Association and Your Literacy Connection West Shore. About 150 people came out for the afternoon to play board, card and dice games together. We learned how we can use games to improve our literacy skills in a fun way. Family Literacy DirectoryIn Greater Victoria, many organizations work to help families improve their literacy. In 2006, the READ Society developed and published the Family Literacy Directory and an on-line family literacy map. The directory and map make it easier for families to find literacy resources close to them. The map and directory were developed with funding from the National Literacy Secretariat and with input from 46 community agencies, school districts, businesses and government ministries.
