Children and Youth Resources and Links

Here’s our collection of resources, grouped for children, youth and parents. We add links regularly, so check back frequently. If you know of any good learning websites, please email us.

Children

  • Pick up the pen – Learn to Write!  – a collection of handwriting links from an American promotional products company.
  • Browser Books – stories to read on your browser,  for beginning readers.
  • Dance Mat Typing – a UK site with typing exercises (ask your adult if you need help understanding the British accent).
  • Greater Victoria Public Library kids’ pages – fun and useful stuff for kids and teens including study tips and on-line stories.
  • Guyku – from the book Guyku, A Year of Haiku for Boys, this site has projects, activities and free stuff.
  • GUYS READ – link to a web-based literacy program for boys, designed to help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers.
  • Kids Help Phone – provides toll-free, 24-hour, anonymous phone counselling  for children.
  • Orangekids.ca – learn about saving, earning, spending and investing from ING Direct with games and videos.
  • ReadNowBC, K-12 – this section of the provincial government’s literacy site has resources for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12.
  • Robert Munsch –  the official website of one of Canada’s favourite children’s authors, with poetry and listen on-line stories.
  • Silly Books –  listen to stories on-line and send in your own.
  • Smart Start for Kids – interactive videos and games from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce to increase kids’ understanding of money and banking.
  • Sofa Adventures in Reading - this surprising site with its collection of kid, tween and teen book titles was recommended to READ by the students in Ms. McKnight’s class in Delaware
  • Spelling City.com – a fun online spelling program (please note: This is an American site with American spelling).
  • Statistics Canada's Kids' Zone – Canada quiz, Canada maps, Census games, colouring pages, word search and more.

Youth

  • Algebasics – do algebra on-line and get step-by-step instructions
  • Fun Brain – do Mad Libs on line, read pages from Diary of A Wimpy Kid and find games
  • Grammar Bytes! – terms, exercises and handouts to help make sense of grammar
  • Greater Victoria Public Library teens’ pages – fun and useful stuff for kids and teens including study tips and on-line stories

  • Math Playground – for elementary and middle school kids

  • Young Poets.ca – a website for young poets and their teachers with markets and contests
