Child and Youth Programs – Ages 6 to 18
Reading aloud together is fun. Noisy Kids Reading ClubWhat is the Noisy Kids Reading Club? The READ Society’s professional teachers developed the Noisy Kids Reading Club curriculum to support students’ learning. Students experience reading in a new way by taking turns reading scripts (adapted from popular Canadian children’s stories) aloud. Often called Readers’ Theatre, this type of performance has been used around the world as a means to support learning in a fun and unique format. Once the students become comfortable with the script, they have the chance to read in front of a small, supportive audience (without costumes or props). Students typically spend time discussing the themes in the script, developing speaking skills to “bring the story to life,” practicing their parts and talking about what they learned. The Readers’ Theatre technique involves all aspects of language arts – listening, speaking, reading, representing and writing. Participation gives students a reason for reading and an opportunity to develop new reading skills. The repeated practice increases students’ fluency and comprehension. After School Program The Noisy Kids Reading Club is offered at no cost to children in select Greater Victoria schools who are attending out-of-school care programs. Please call our office at 250-388-7225 for more information or if you would be interested in volunteering to help deliver this program. |
