Child and Youth Programs – Ages 6 to 18Education OutreachEducation Outreach was a pilot project offered in the Greater Victoria school district in 2008-09. READ teachers travelled to two district schools so students could get extra help without the additional obstacle of getting to our offices. Students whose teacher felt they could benefit from extra help in reading, writing, and mathematics met with READ teachers after school. Before getting down to work, they enjoyed a nutritious snack so they could concentrate on learning. Education Outreach was offered at no cost to children thanks to funding through the Victoria Times Colonist's Raise-a-Reader 150th Anniversary Grant and through partnership with the Greater Victoria school district. How it workedWe began with an assessment of each student to identify learning gaps and help develop an individualized program. Assessments were conducted for language arts (reading, writing, comprehension) and mathematics, depending on the student’s needs and with input from school teachers. Classes were offered for 1 ½ hours twice a week. Class sizes were limited to no more than six students, with two teachers and one student teacher per class. At the end of the year, READ conducted an evaluation of the program and recommended to the funder that remaining dollars be re-allocated to support programming in a different manner. Looking AheadREAD and the Greater Victoria school district are eager to offer this program again with adjustments based on the experience. |
