Adult Learning
About our Adult Learning Program
Our programs help adults and youth improve their basic literacy skills in reading, writing, math, and computer skills. We offer individual instruction on an hourly basis.
Our teachers are professionals who have experience in helping adults who have not finished high school or who have been out of school or the workforce for many years. Often, the learning challenges that frustrate people can be resolved with individualized attention in a safe and comfortable environment.
How do I get started?
- Call our staff. We will ask
- what learning areas you or your client needs help with (reading, writing, math, computer skills)
- what level of education has been completed
- what your or your client’s goals are
- We will ask whether you or your client qualify for funding
- through programs like Income Assistance, Employment Insurance, Reachback funding, Skills Link, ICBC, and WorkSafe BC.
- if we determine funding is a possibility, we will refer you to the correct local agency to begin the financial processes. Once that is underway, you will come back to READ and a teacher will meet with you to decide which program is best
- if we determine funding is not possible, we can discuss individual rates or refer you to another community agency
- Next, we will determine if an assessment is required. Assessments are done when
- our teachers want to identify your learning needs to help create an individualized program
- no educational assessments have been done by other agencies
- If an assessment is required, it will
- be scheduled within about a week
- take about two hours
- be confidential (the results will only be shared with you and your funder)
- include a discussion of your long-term goals
- determine whether classes would be helpful
- if no assessment is recommended, or once the assessment is complete, we will create a suitable program
- We offer individualized instruction with one student per teacher. Class times can be arranged with the teacher, either once or twice a week during the day or evening. We accept new students year-round.
- Instruction may include
- reading (word identification and comprehension)
- writing (clear communication skills and spelling)
- math (basic skills)
- computers (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation programs, internet and email)
- study skills
- we require a three-month commitment to ensure the individualized program can be successfully completed and you have enough time to absorb the new techniques and information.
